València
Over 2000 years of history carved the warren-like streets of Valencia's old town — Spain's third-largest city, reinventing itself at a heady pace, snapping at the heels of its Catalan neighbour.
What València is like
Portrait drawn from Lonely Planet & The Rough Guide.
An enviable perch on the Mediterranean.
Worth the trip
- The outlandish buildings of Santiago Calatrava's Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias, completed 2005
- Russafa, the barrio for cool creatives
- The Catedral de Valencia and Mercado Central
Fiestas
- Las Fallas, March 12-19, by far the biggest fallas festival and one of Spain's most important fiestas
A little history
Occupied by the Moors for over four centuries with only a brief interruption when El Cid recaptured it (1094-1101); he died here in 1099, but his propped-up body still caused the Moorish armies to flee in terror.
